Driving Notes & What to Expect
- The Honister and Wrynose Passes are steep, with sharp bends. Not for the faint-hearted. Go slow at bends, check weather (fog or wet surfaces make these more challenging).
- Roads may be narrow, single lane in places, especially up passes or in valleys. Oncoming traffic, farm animals, cyclists: expect them.
- Parking can be difficult at popular lakes or villages in peak season – early starts help.
- Summer: busiest time. Spring & early autumn offer quieter roads and excellent colour. Winter: parts may be impassable due to snow or ice.
- Expect twisty mountain roads, especially on the passes: tight corners, steep gradients, sometimes narrow or uneven surfaces. These are as much part of the experience as the views.
- Elevation changes give your engine a workout; ensure your car is in good working order (brakes, cooling, tyres).
- Some passes like Wrynose are remote – limited services. Fuel up before entering remote valleys.
- Early morning or off-peak times give you smoother roads and better light for photography.
